Le projet WISE-Man (WaterSat Imaging Spectrometer Experiment for optically shallow inland coastal waters assessment – Manicouagan) vise à démontrer le potentiel du capteur WISE pour le suivi des environnements côtiers et littoraux (estimation de la bathymétrie, qualité des eaux, propriétés du substrat) dans le but de soutenir les besoins pressants de la science (écologie, géomorphologie, risques côtiers), la gestion des ressources et les opérations de défense. Dans ce contexte, une campagne de terrain intensive a été réalisée dans la région de Manicouagan / Baie-Comeau en août 2019.

La campagne de terrain fut supportée par quatre sources de financement principales: l’Agence Spatiale Canadienne (ASC) pour le vol aéroporté, plusieurs bourses étudiantes et une partie des frais logistiques. Pêches et Océans Canada (MPO) a fournit trois zodiacs incluant un capitaine pour le Kildir, une équipe de cinq plongeurs et un océanographe optique. Le Réseau Québec Maritime (RQM) a fournit des fonds pour la location du FJ Saucier comprenant un hydrographe et un capitaine. Finalement, la location d’un camion fut possible grâce à une contribution de Québec-Océan.

The WaterSat Imaging Spectrometer Experiment (WISE) for optically shallow inland and coastal waters assessment (the WISE-Man project)’s objective was to demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral imagery for mapping bathymetry, water column quality (or inherent optical properties) and retrieve bottom properties in order to respond to the pressing needs of science (e.g. ecology, geomorphology, coastal risk), resource management and defense operation.  Within this framework , an intensive fieldwork campaign was conducted in the Manicouagan / Baie-Comeau region in August 2019.

The field campaign was supported by four main sources of funding. The Canadian Space Agency funded the airborne survey, several undergraduate and graduate students grants, and part of the logistic cost (lodging, instruments calibrations, etc).  The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) provided three zodiacs including one captain for the Kildir, a team of five divers and one optical oceanographer. The Réseau Québec Maritime (RQM) provided funding for the rental of the FJ Saucier with one hydrographer and a captain. Finally truck rental was supported by the Québec-Océan network.

Data obtained within the framework of WISE-Man are stil begin analyzed by our team of students and researchers. Many papers are in progress. Follow the advancement of this project on ResearchGate here.

L’accessibilité des données pour les autres scientifiques et chercheurs ainsi que le grand public est un aspect important de ce projet. Dans ce contexte, les données seront intégrées à la plateforme de partage de l’OGSL (Observatoire Global du St-Laurent). Cette initiative est en cours et les premières données concernant la biomasse des plantes marines sont disponibles.

An important aspect of the project is to make the data available to other scientists as well as the public. In that context, the integration of the project’s data with the SLGO (St.Lawrence Global Observatory) has started and is ongoing. The first dataset regarding marine plants biomass is available.
